Trentino

Land with a vocation for the vine

In Trentino the vine is one of the basic elements making up the landscape: the characteristic pergolas, with their geometric perfection, harmoniously follow the contours of hills and blend in with the mountains.

Vine cultivation extends over an altitude band ranging from 70 to 700 metres and there are considerable variations in geography and climate even between areas that are very close. Just to give an example, while in the north of Trentino the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites reach lofty heights and the climate is unmistakably Alpine, just over 100 km away, to the south near Lake Garda, Mediterranean temperatures allow lemons and olive trees to flourish. Soils with extremely varied compositions have enabled the different varieties to find their own particular habitat, in the same way as the climate – featuring great differences between day and night temperatures in the period leading up to grape harvesting – enables the wines to express outstanding bouquets.

The many different types of wine that Trentino can produce have something of the incredible. The peculiarity of the landscape with areas featuring different climates, ranging from sub-Mediterranean (Valle dei Laghi, Valle del Sarca), to continental (Vallagarina, Valdadige, Piana Rotaliana), to Alpine (Cembra Valley), has given rise to an infinite number of production combinations.

The area in Trentino under vine (approx. 9,850 ha), though stable in terms of absolute numbers, has been deeply transformed over the last decade, with more emphasis being placed on white varieties, currently representing 50% of vines cultivated. With 80% of vineyards having D.O.C. status, Trentino together with Alto Adige represents the region with the highest percentage of DOC (Denominazione d'Origine Controllata) production. The national average is in fact around 30%.
